A Marketer's Map of the DMV: Where the Interesting Work Is Happening

Carl Pierre on where the most interesting marketing and tech work is happening across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Stylized editorial map of the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region

Ask people where the interesting marketing and technology work happens and they name the coasts. Spend time in the Washington DC metro and you find a scene that is deeper and more varied than its reputation. Here is my map of it.

Washington, DC

The District anchors the region, with a tech economy shaped by govtech, cybersecurity, and a startup base that grew up alongside the coworking movement. It is where the networks are densest. More on the Washington DC page.

Maryland

Maryland, especially around Montgomery County, brings biotech, federal research, and a quietly strong base of marketing and creative talent. It is home for me, and an underrated hub in its own right. More on the Maryland page.

Virginia

Northern Virginia has become one of the country's most important technology corridors, with Arlington and Alexandria each developing their own character, from enterprise tech to a hospitality and tourism economy that needs serious marketing. More on the Virginia page.

Why the map matters

The DMV's strength is that it is not trying to be one thing. The work spreads across three jurisdictions with different specialties, and the marketers who understand the whole region have an edge. I write about it in DC Tech and the DMV and trace its history in why Washington DC quietly became a real tech town. See my background.
